Denis Pic Lelièvre
Denis Lelièvre, known as “Pic,”was born in Paris, France in 1961. He is an author of comic strips, illustrator, sculptor, and well-known “street art” performer. His stencils appear in the first French books dedicated to the subject: Pochoirs à la Une, 1986, and Le Livre du graffiti, 1990.
Pic went on to publish Une Farce pour deux dindons and, in 2004, 45 tours de magie en bandes dessinées (Albin Michel), a compilation of stories done for the magazine Spirou, featuring the characters Pic and Zou (more than 500 strip plates published to this date).
He has also written several children books for Casterman, Nœuds malins, Cradingue, 1000 et Une idées pour ne pas s’ennuyer, Trop Cool!, and illustrated a series of works for L’École des loisirs.
He met Gilbert Shelton, the mythical author of the Freak Brothers, with whom he initiated in 1992 a collaboration that gave birth to six comics in the series Not Quite Dead, released by Knockabout Comics in the U.K.
He worked as a colorist for many of Shelton’s personal creations: record covers, comic strips (The Fabulous Freak Brothers and Wonder Wart Hog), and even a jacket for the mythical ZAP Comix (# 15). In 2019, he inaugurated the Mama Editions’ series “Graphics” with Grow Organic, the first comic strip guide dedicated to this subject (a freely adapted version of The Bio Grow Book.
